January 2026 Business Tax Deadlines: Key Dates to Remember

As we step into January 2026, businesses must be aware of important tax deadlines that can impact compliance and financial planning. Proper preparation now can safeguard against penalties and ensure your accounting practices are on the right track.

January 15 - Employer’s Monthly Deposit Deadline:

For employers, January 15 is crucial if you are required to adhere to the monthly deposit schedule. This is when Social Security, Medicare, and withheld income taxes are due for December 2025. The same date applies for nonpayroll withholding deposits under the monthly rule. It's important to note that these employment tax deposits must be made electronically, unless your liability is under $2,500 for a return period. In such cases, quarterly or annual payments with the return are permitted.

January 15 - Farmers and Fishermen

Farmers and fishermen are required to pay their estimated tax for 2025 using Form 1040-ES by this date. Although the deadline to file the 2025 income tax return (Form 1040 or Form 1040-SR) extends to April 15, failing to meet the January deadline necessitates filing and paying any due taxes by March 2, 2026, to avoid penalties.

Extensions for Weekends & Holidays:

Be mindful that if a tax due date coincides with a weekend or a federal holiday, the deadline will be automatically extended to the next business day that isn’t a holiday.

Disaster Area Extensions:

In the event an area is declared a disaster zone, tax deadlines will be adjusted accordingly. To verify if your area qualifies for an extension, check the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and IRS websites:

IRS: https://www.irs.gov/newsroom/tax-relief-in-disaster-situations
